Art Class 101 - Beginning Composition part 1Composing the figure within the picture plane can be one of the most challenging and least understood areas of figure drawing. The figure should look like it integrates with the background and that the lighting of the figure must match the ambient light of the space tone. What I see all too often is people rendering figures from photographs, which universally lights the figure the same in all areas. But as an artist we should deviate from the actual lighting on the model and make choices that force a focal point to the composition. The focal point is the area of the most emphasis, or where we want the viewer to look first. We then need to give them a method for moving around the piece so that they know what to look at second and third, etc. If everything is drawn in the same manner, the viewer doesnt know what you want them to focus on and everything has the same importance. Art 101 Composition Part 2In a continuation of my first article on composition, http://news.deviantart.com/article/44402/, Id like to get more specific on some traditional structures for composition based on geometric forms. Many of these foundations for composition are borrowed from artists as far back as the Renaissance who strongly favored triangle, circular and diagonal themes. Thinking about a compositional structure before you begin to paint or draw can produce a much stronger image that "reads" well to the viewer and has a sense of organization rather then leaving things to chance. I feel like this one has one of the best imagery that says "Shaman Totem". The overlapping and the  transparencies  really add to the beauty of this image.

Despite the few "tweaking" needed, the idea came together well. I especially like how the wolves are placed around her. They not only look  menicing, but protective at the same time.

Art class 101 -Digital painting beginning exerciseSphere demo
This is a great way to try digital painting and to get used to two very different methods of digital painting, I will refer to them as glazing and direct painting. I find when teaching this to my students that it is about a 50/50 split as to which method the students prefer. Either method will produce beautiful results.
The reason I start with the sphere is so that students master the techniques on a simple object, but don’t let that fool you. A sphere is a very complex shape when you are first starting out. If you can mater shading a sphere smoothly then you will be well on your way to mastering digital painting. I often suggest students try the sphere exercise several times until they can do it smoothly.
